SARAH T. BROOKS, Lecturer, Medieval Art, Ph.D. Institute of Fine Arts, New York University. Sarah Brooks, a specialist in Medieval art and architecture, received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU. She teaches undergraduate courses in the Middle Ages, and Art in Culture to c. 1400. Brooks has received major grants to support her research, including fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, Dumbarton Oaks, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Research Institute in Turkey, and the Archaeological Institute of America. Her current book project, entitled Imaging the Soul in Byzantine Art and Architecture 1204-1453, explores the interplay of ritual, art, and building for the the dead in Byzantium during the later Middle Ages. Brooks' past publications have appeared in the Dumbarton Oaks Papers; Restoring Byzantium: The Kariye Camii in Istanbul and the Byzantine Institute Restoration; and Byzantium: Faith and Power, 1261-1557. She recently served as editor for the 2006 Yale University Press collection of essays, Byzantium: Faith and Power (1261-1557). Perspectives on Late Byzantine Art and Culture, completed during her tenure as Research Associate in Medieval Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2002-2006). Brooks' new research projects include the use of sculpted precious metal icons in the Byzantine iconostasis, and artistic exchange among Byzantium, western Europe and the Islamic East during the thirteenth century. |
